Last weekend I drove down to King George, Virginia for a cyclocross race. For those not familiar, 'cross is a hybrid of road and mountain biking -- take a beefy road bike, add somewhat knobby tires and head out for 45 minutes of anaerobic torture through fields, dirt roads and singletrack trails. Periodically the course will feature a hill too steep to ride or barriers (or logs, or sand pits, or muddy bogs) that force riders to dismount and run with their bikes. It was invented by nutty Belgians a century ago to keep in shape in the off-season. I used to be good at it, but this fall I was lazy and haven't been racing or training much. Blame it on Mt. Washington.

When I wasn't racing, I was taking pictures. Some of them are posted on line. Check them out.

My latest article in Smithsonian came out in the November issue. It's a profile of Aaron Huey, a budding photographer who walked across America with his dog Cosmo in 2002. Along the way he shot a lot of great pictures, which were the substance of the feature.

Seeing as how I am an editor here and all, my boss Carey Winfrey saw fit to profile me in the October issue of Smithsonian. The picture on the web is of him, not me. My hair is longer.
