Under the Baltic

This week's issue of Science includes a feature I wrote on Stone Age archaeology off the German coast. It's essentially a profile of the SINCOS project, which is a multidisciplinary look at the prehistory of the Baltic Sea. I spent a day on a dive boat, which was a lot of fun but a little frustrating -- because I'm no diver, I spent a lot of time looking down into the water wondering what was going on, then debriefing patient scientists when they resurfaced.
Here's a link to the article.

Microfinance, Take II
I had a piece on The New Republic's website this morning criticizing Mohammed Yunus, founder of Grameen Bank and the godfather of microfinance.
Yunus will be awarded a well-deserved Nobel Peace Prize in a few days. My take on the issue -- inspired by my trip to Serbia a while back -- is that the maturing microfinance industry shouldn't be afraid of making a profit.
I suspect it'll draw some fire, but that's a good thing.
