Wired, baby!
My piece about Angela Merkel's evolving vlog was posted today on Wired's website.
I'm excited -- I've wanted to write something for Wired since I hand-delivered a pitch on bike messengers to their office in San Francisco in 2000. Looking back, I wonder why I thought a hand-delivered pitch (you know, ON PAPER) was the right way to approach Wired.
I was young and callow then.
Things are different now.
For some funny German comedy (not always oxymoronic) check out parodist Ivo Lotion's YouTube clips of Merkel on the phone with her mother and a groovin' Merkel mashup.

Foreign reporting

I went to Serbia and Montenegro week before last to visit a friend and see the Balkans, the one spot on the map of Eastern Europe I hadn't filled in yet. I managed to hit five countries in nine days (and nine airports) but there's still a long list I need to address, namely Bosnia, Slovenia, Macedonia and Albania.
While I was there I talked to Radovinka Andric (above), who owns a hair salon on the edge of Belgrade. I was reporting a story on microfinance, which is a really cool concept that's coming into its own. The story is in the Christian Science Monitor tomorrow.

Euro-conservatives
My latest piece for The New Republic Online was posted Thursday. It was a long time in coming, but I'm glad it finally ran.
